I have been writing poetry since I was 11 years old. Back then, and not until recently, it never crossed my mind to organize my writings into a collection, let alone publish them. All the poetry I have read on my own or learned about in school never looked like or sounded like what I wrote. And honestly, I didn’t think anyone would be interested in reading what I wrote. I guess you could say I didn’t consider my writings poetry.
In 2016, I discovered and read Rupi Kaur’s first poetry collection, Milk and Honey. I was captivated and inspired. I couldn’t read the book fast enough. More than anything what caught my deep interest was her style of writing. It wasn’t what you would consider a “traditional” form of poetry. And there were MILLIONS of people interested in her nontraditional poetry.
In that moment in 2016, the publishing seed was planted in my head and in my heart. I realized there may be people out there who want to read my poetry, because it is indeed poetry, and I knew in my heart I wanted to share my writings with the world. Four years later, here I am having published my first poetry collection and already working on my second.
My goal here at Alana M. Abernethy is to create an enjoyable experience for my followers by sharing my poetry and writings based on my experiences in life, my perspective, and my observations of the world. At the same time, I want others to be inspired by my story and my poetry; inspired to believe in themselves, in their passion, and to unabashedly bring their dreams to life!
